Plunge Pools in Minnesota

A plunge pool is a compact, usually deeper pool built for cooling off, soaking and sitting on the ledge rather than swimming laps. In Minnesota it is the pool that fits a normal suburban lot, heats fast enough to use in April and October, and leaves room for the rest of the backyard.

Why It Matters

Why Plunge Pools Make Sense in Minnesota

Our season is short, so the two things that matter most are heat and a cover. A 3,200-gallon plunge pool heats in a fraction of the time and cost of a 15,000-gallon pool, and an automatic cover holds that heat overnight, which is what turns a three-month pool into a six-month one. The smaller footprint also fits the walkout lots and tighter yards most of our clients have, with room left for a patio, a fire table and a lawn.

How We Work

How a Plunge Pool Backyard Comes Together

One accountable team, from the first sketch to the first swim.

Free Consultation

At your home or in our Lake Elmo showroom. We look at access, grade, sun, the fence line and where the equipment can go.

3D Design

The pool, deck, fence, shade, fire and plantings designed together so you see the whole backyard, and so the permit drawings come out of the same model.

Permits and Order

City pool and fence permits, the survey, and the shell order through Blaiser Pools, timed for your start week.

Set the Pool

Excavation and a crane set, usually within days, then plumbing, electrical and the heater.

Build the Backyard

Deck, fence, pergola or cabana, fire feature, lighting, plantings and lawn, finished the same season as the pool.

Options

Ways to Build Around a Plunge Pool

A small pool leaves room for the things that make a backyard a destination.

Heater and Auto Cover

The Minnesota essentials. A heater runs the pool warm enough for spring and fall; the cover keeps the heat in, keeps leaves out and satisfies the energy code on heated pools.

Spa-Style Use

Run it warm in April and October and it works like a very large hot tub, with a tanning ledge for the kids in July.

Fire Table Beside the Ledge

A linear gas fire table on the deck is what makes the pool usable on a 55-degree evening.

Pergola or Cabana

Louvered shade over a lounge, or a small cabana with a changing room, sized to a smaller deck.

Low-Litter Plantings

Grasses, hydrangeas and upright evergreens that screen the neighbors and stay out of the water; see our pool landscaping guide.

Lighting

Deck, step and fence lighting that makes a small pool feel like a resort after dark.

What Affects the Cost

Plunge Pool Sizes and Prices in Minnesota

A plunge pool itself runs $85,000 to $130,000 installed, versus around $130,000 for a full-size pool. It is not half the price of a big pool because the pump, filter, heater, automation, electrical service, fence and permit cost about the same at any size; the savings are in the shell, the excavation and the smaller deck around it.

A complete plunge pool backyard, with the deck, fence, plantings, lighting and a place to sit, typically lands $150,000 to $260,000. Still Waters in Mahtomedi, a compact fiberglass pool with a full landscape, was $260,000 as a complete project.

  • Heater and auto coverThe two upgrades that matter most in Minnesota; the cover is required on heated pools by the state energy code.
  • Deck size and materialA plunge pool needs less deck, but porcelain or large-format pavers cost more per square foot than basic concrete pavers.
  • Access and gradeA crane set over the house, tight side yards or a sloped lot add to the install.
  • Fence and permitsRequired at any size; see our pool rules guide for what cities ask for.

FAQ

Common Plunge Pools Questions

How much does a plunge pool cost in Minnesota?
The plunge pool itself runs $85,000 to $130,000 installed. A complete plunge pool backyard with deck, fence, plantings and lighting typically lands $150,000 to $260,000. See our plunge pool cost guide for the breakdown.
What size is a plunge pool?
Most run 10 to 20 feet long and 8 to 12 feet wide, 4 to 6 feet deep. The Latham Enchantment 9.17 we install most is 9 feet 1 inch by 17 feet 5 inches and 4 feet 9 inches deep, holding about 3,200 gallons.
Can you swim in a plunge pool?
You can cool off, float, soak and sit on the ledge, and with a swim jet you can swim in place. It is not built for laps; our Corinthian 16 and Monaco shells on the pools page are.
Can a plunge pool be heated in Minnesota?
Yes, and it should be. A small pool heats quickly and affordably, and with an automatic cover holding the heat overnight most of our plunge pool families use theirs from spring into fall. The Minnesota energy code requires a vapor-retardant cover on any heated pool.
Does a plunge pool need a fence and a permit?
Yes. Cities treat a plunge pool like any inground pool: a building permit, a code-compliant fence with self-closing gates, setbacks from property lines, and electrical permits for the equipment. Our pool rules guide explains what to expect, city by city.
Who installs the plunge pool?
Fiberglass plunge pools are installed through our sister company Blaiser Pools, a Latham dealer, while our team designs and builds the deck, fence, shade, plantings and lighting around it as one project.
